Developing a global register of
competences for threatened species recovery practitioners
Here at Durrell and alongside Global Wildlife Conservation, we are developing a competence register, a directory of the possible skills, knowledge and personal qualities required by people working on globally or regionally threatened species recovery programmes around the world, in both in-situ and ex-situ contexts. The register will broadly follow the structure of the IUCN Protected Area competence register (Appleton, 2016), with three competence groups: planning, management and administration; threatened species recovery practice; general personal competences. These groups will follow a four professional level system (Executive - Senior Manager - Middle Manager - Skilled Worker), so that all levels of ability will benefit from the framework, enabling the measurement of individual development, both within and between professional levels, wherever possible.
We firmly believe that to be effective the development of the competence register should involve a wide range of experts in the field of threatened species recovery (TSR). We are seeking your help to review the first draft of the register. All involved in the project will be acknowledged as collaborators on any subsequent publications. Please complete this very short surveyto register your details and log your areas of knowledge and expertise.
The links below will take you to guidance videos, which talk you through the TSR competence register project and how to conduct the consultation. We ask that you take some time to watch the short videos and then use the consultation links below to review the areas of threatened species recovery most relevant to your knowledge and expertise.
