Alumni Photo Competition is back for 2023

Time to get snapping
Simply submit a maximum of 3 photographs that you think meet one or both of the following categories, and you could be the lucky winner of £250!
We are looking for photos that fit into either of the 2 categories:
a) I never thought I'd find myself doing this...!(relating to your conservation role)
OR
b) What makes you love your job?All photos must be accompanied by a thoughtful caption (max. 40 words) that explains the image, or puts it into context.

How to Enter
By submitting a photo in this competition you are agreeing to the Terms & Conditions set out below. Please submit your photos in one of the following ways:
- Attach up to 3 photos using jpg, png files, you may need to reduce the size of your print to do so (2MB should be sufficient quality). Each photo file name should have your surname (and be numbered if there are multiple photos).
- In your email text, please add the captions (max 40 words for each caption) and number them to correspond with the numbers on the photo file names. You can attach a word document of the captions if you prefer.
- Include in the email the course and year you attended.
- In the email 'Subject' please add >Photo Competition> Your full name (and or the one you used for training with us) and then send with the attachments to academy@durrell.org
On the Alumni Hub
How will the winner be selected?If you are already a member of the Alumni Hub then you can upload your photos and captions right there on the site, just open the Photo Competition square and click the green button. If you aren't already a member of our Alumni resource area then don't miss out. Click here and self enrol using the Alumni enrollment key DLN1904 (please do not share this key, as this is an Alumni only area).
The five top photos (from five different photographers) will be selected by Academy staff based on visual impact, content/composition, thoughtfulness of written captions and how it fits the category. We invite you to think about picture(s) that best describe you and your work. We are looking for imagery that is active, engaging, or humorous. Images which communicate the depth, breadth and wealth of conservation field work which Durrell trained conservationists participate in. The overall winner will be voted for by Alumni!
The Vote
Voting will take place on the Durrell Learning Network Private Facebook Group and the Durrell Alumni Hub (if you haven’t enrolled in one or the other yet, click on the links to join). New members to Alumni Hub will need to use the enrollment key DLN1904.
The vote will take place on 15th-20th September (reminders will be sent out on Facebook and the Alumni Hub Chat.
The Prize!
The winner will receive £250 which can be spent however the entrant sees fit. However, if you plan on spending the money to support your conservation work, please let us know how it will be spent. If you are one of the chosen top 5 we will share this information and your caption, with Alumni members at the vote.
We are a small training team and are unfortunately unable to contact unsuccessful entrants individually, and no feedback on any entry will be provided. -
Terms & Conditions
Please read before submitting your photos
Photo requirements
- Up to THREE photos per person can be entered, only electronic photo images will be accepted.
- Photos must be high quality JPEGs (>2000 pixels on its shortest side) and may not exceed 10MB in size. Photographs may be colour or black & white and uploaded by email as JPEGS or PNG files.
- Photos that have been digitally or otherwise altered will not be accepted. Minor adjustments, including sharpening, contrast, and slight colour adjustments, are acceptable.
- Photos files names MUST include the name of the Alumni, so that we can easily identify the submission. If submitting more than one photo, add a number to the file name. Captions for more than one photo submission must include reference to the number of the relevant photo.
- The entrant can be in the photo provided, in this instance they must be fully involved in undertaking the photograph if it is taken specifically for the purpose of the competition and/or have the agreement from the person who took the photo to submit it for the competition. If other people are in the photo being submitted ensure you have their permission to use their image before you submit them. We do not require other people’s names but if you are in the photo indicate who you are in your caption.
- Please take your photo responsibly and where is safe to do so. Entrants must abide by in country rules and regulations pertaining to the local habitats, communities, and businesses such as farmland and nature reserves and where there may be local instructions in place for people enjoying the environment. Entrants must not cause injury or do anything to distress any animal or damage its habitat, either deliberately or inadvertently, whilst trying to take a photograph.
Eligibility to enter- Only Alumni are eligible to enter, so we can not accept entries from your work colleagues, friends or family members.
- Durrell employees that are Alumni are eligible to enter (with the exception of staff in the Durrell Conservation Academy).
- Photos received after the Competition end date of the 1st September 2023 or without captions, will not be submitted.
Prize Terms
- The prize will consist of £250 or equivalent in local currency. It can only be transferred to the Alumni entering the competition. Entrants must have a safe means in which the Academy can transfer the winnings.
- If the winner is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made, Durrell reserves the right to offer the prize to a runner up.
- We are a small administrative department and will not be providing feedback on losing entries.
Photo rights and usage
Photographs remain the copyrighted property of the photographer; however, Durrell reserves the non-exclusive right to use the images submitted to the contest for publicity, advertising, promotional, educational, and other purposes without obtaining further permission and/or compensation. Durrell will give credit to the photographer where possible. Sending in your photo constitutes acceptance of these terms.
